Songs That Saved Your Life

don't forget the songs
that made you cry
and the songs that saved your life
yes, you're older now
and you're a clever swine
but they were the only ones who ever stood by you

I'm April. I like music.
I post a song a day whenever I can & my story that goes with it.

Au Pairs - “Come Again” (5.28MB mp3 file)

Since moving to Los Angeles, I’ve made goals for myself every year — but attainable ones, not crazy shit like, “Be a movie star!” or “Win an Oscar!” or anything like that. (Not knocking you if those are your goals, but I’m a shitty actress.) In 2010, I acheived some pretty amazing (to me) comedy goals (perform at a festival, work on a TV show), so I decided that in 2011 I’d learn to play bass. Although I like a bit of everything (for the most part), my favorite genre of music is post-punk, which has a heavy focus on funky or angular bass lines, and my favorite parts of a lot of my favorite songs are the sweet bass licks.

I wanted to get a head start on next year’s goal, so I went over to David’s house for my first lesson. After I picked up his bass guitar for the first time, he taught me how to play the bass line to this — my favorite Au Pairs song — in about 30 minutes. (I mean, he taught me the notes — I’m not trying to act like I’m some savant that was slappin’ like Victor Wooten on my first try.) It was so exciting! I bought my own bass the next day and I’ve probably listened to this song more in the past few days than I had in the whole of my life, as I’m trying to perfect my technique.
