For the most part (I think), I like to fancy myself a Tuff Chick. When it comes to being ripped on, I feel I can give it as good as I take it, and it really takes a lot to actually hurt my feelings. (I mean, I think so. Looking back over this blog I’m like, “Well, you’ve written about Belle & Sebastian more than once, so maybe you’re not really that hard,” heh.) But I truly do love a good joke, and appreciate the fact that I have friends in my life that I can tease and be teased by and no one gets their draws up in a bunch about it.
However, having said that, I once dated a guy who was kind of harsh — he wasn’t, like, a raging asshole or anything, but his jokes would just really cut deep sometimes and kind of get a little too real. I felt like a total wuss, but one night I had to break it down to him: “You get a little cutthroat with me, man. I love a good laugh as much as anyone, but I’m your girlfriend! You can’t be super caustic to me all the time, you know?” I mean, jokes and quips and pranks and all those things are great fun, but at the end of the day I just really have one solid rule that the person I’m in a relationship with has to follow: Be nice to me. I’ll reciprocate! In life, we’re surrounded every day by so many people who just want to complain and be grumps and all that, so it’s nice if you know you’ll come home to someone who will be gentle with you.
