Late of the Pier - “Broken” (5.74MB mp3 file)
When Chip and I went to Sheffield a couple years ago, we hung out with my awesome friends Kathryn and Dorian (who were themselves a part of one of my favorite bands ever to exist, The Long Blondes), and on a Sunday afternoon while enjoying a lovely traditional Sunday roast at Bungalows and Bears, I asked Dorian what new music I should look out for while I was in England.
“Late of the Pier,” he immediately said. He then went on to tell us about how he hadn’t been as excited about an album in a very long time. “You’ve got to get Fantasy Black Channel,” he urged.
I did, the next day at an HMV. And I was instantly obsessed. Overall it’s pretty ’80s and synth-y, sure, but I feel like they did something different with that. There are a few songs on the record that sound like Gary Numan and Human League and fuggin’ Prince all got together and jammed. It’s really great and super enjoyable from start to finish — not a dud on the whole CD. A couple months after we got back from England, Chip went to Austin and got to see them perform at South by Southwest and was blown away, calling me after their show and exclaiming, “These guys are insanely good multi-instrumentalists! And they’re so young!” They’re currently on “hiatus,” which means I will probably never get to see them live myself. And that really bums me out.
Songs That Saved Your Life
don't forget the songs
that made you cry
and the songs that saved your life
yes, you're older now
and you're a clever swine
but they were the only ones who ever stood by you
