Pulp - “Lipgloss” (3.26MB mp3 file)
He’s a genius in general, but no one captures the heartbreaking, terrible, and cringeworthy breakdowns of sexual aspects of relationships better than Jarvis Cocker.
Now nothing you do can turn him on
There’s something wrong
You had it once, but now it’s gone
These lyrics make me tense up with awkwardness thinking of the times in my life when I tried to appear sexy or appealing to someone who was already way past being interested in me in that capacity — thinking of how you still try to do or say the things the person used to like but now those same things have only become obvious indicators of your desperation. UGH. GOD. I find few things more depressing than the cold hard fact that someone who used to think you were beautiful and compelling now thinks you are average and unremarkable and unmemorable. That is still so weird to me! It’s even still weird that I also have that attitude toward some people I used to dote on! Oof.
You had it once, but now it’s gone.
Songs That Saved Your Life
don't forget the songs
that made you cry
and the songs that saved your life
yes, you're older now
and you're a clever swine
but they were the only ones who ever stood by you
