I was watching MTV or VH1 at around 2 in the morning sometime in the early 2000s with my then-boyfriend (by the way, I actually kind of hate how a lot of these entries say “me and my boyfriend,” but, you know, you spend a lot of time with someone when you’re in a relationship with them and then a lot of songs end up reminding you of those memories and blahhhh) when this video came on, and at first we both started tooling on it, like, “Nice white guy barefoot sexy soul, dork! HURRR!” But by the end, we both looked at each other saying, “Um, this is kind of a jam?” We were both kind of reluctantly feelin’ it. (It also became a running joke between us that when someone would call, the other would sing in a terrible cracking falsetto, “Take a messaaaaage!”)
