When I was 7 or 8, I saw “Mannequin” (and would later become obsessed with it and watch it every single time it was shown on TV, which seemed to be pretty often back in the day) and I thought this song was, like, the essence of romance. Even as a little girl who never dreamed of her wedding day or ever wanted to be a princess or anything like that, I still thought that someday a boy would sing this to me, simply because no song expressed feelings of love better than this one. (Keep in mind that scene in “Say Anything” hadn’t happened yet.) It was just a fact: To my young, tiny mind, a more romantic song had never been written.
Listening to it now, I can hardly believe how atrocious it is. God, what a terrible, terrible song.
