3rd Bass - “Triple Stage Darkness” (5.73MB mp3 file)
So I’ve been obsessed with The Smiths for 100 years (okay, since middle school), and have also had a cassette copy of 3rd Bass’ The Cactus Album (The Cactus Cee/D?) for about the same time (it had to be purchased after seeing “The Gas Face” on “Yo! MTV Raps,” of course) — however, for some reason (I’m an idiot), only in the past couple of months did I realize that the opening sample of this song is the same from the end of “Rubber Ring”! Are MC Serch and Pete Nice also fans of my Mancunian heroes?! (Just sayin’, The Smiths used it first.)
The story of the sample, from “Mozipedia: The Encyclopedia of Morrissey and The Smiths” by Simon Goddard:
…taken from a 7” single originally distributed with Dr. Konstantin Raudive’s 1971 book “Breakthrough: An Amazing Experiment In Electronic Communcation with the Dead.” Raudive was a Latvian parapsychologist who dedicated himself to the study of Electronic Voice Phenomena: the belief that spirits could communicate from beyond the grave by leaving static noises on tape which could then be deciphered. The voice on “Rubber Ring” belongs to Nadia Fowler, offering an English translation of a message Raudive has “received” from a deceased colleague in a mixture of Swedish and German: “Du sovas/willst nicht glaube!” — “You are sleeping/You do not want to believe.”
Songs That Saved Your Life
don't forget the songs
that made you cry
and the songs that saved your life
yes, you're older now
and you're a clever swine
but they were the only ones who ever stood by you
